Kazakhstan and Japan have the moral right and duty to achieve complete nuclear disarmament

ASTANA, September 20, 2018 – The International Conference “Kazakhstan-Japan Cooperation in Nuclear Disarmament: One Destiny, Common Goals” was held at the Institute of World Economy and Politics (IMEP) under the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy Foundation. This event was organized jointly with the Japanese Goi Peace Foundation and the Prayer for Peace Society.

At the opening of the conference the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerzhan Ashikbayev made a statement that stressed the strong political will of President Nursultan Nazarbayev and the commitment of the people of Kazakhstan to achieve complete nuclear disarmament and pointed to the need for consolidation of both efforts  at the interstate level and in the civil society sector. The Kazakh diplomat noted the historic importance of the disarmament initiatives of the Head of State, highlighting the significance of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, adopted on the initiative of Kazakhstan in 2015, on the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings, the Universal Declaration of Peace-making free of nuclear weapons, and the Manifesto “Peace. XXI century ».

In addition, Ashikbayev informed on the interaction of the two countries in various fields, emphasizing a close partnership in the field of ensuring international security, including nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

The President of the Peace Foundation of Goi and the Society “Pray for Peace” Hiroo Sayonji, and the Executive Director of the Foundation of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy, Kanat Dzhumabayev, delivered a welcoming speech.

Olzhas Suleimenov, leader of the international movement “Nevada-Semey”, member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Majilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Abay Tasbulatov, honorary Ambassador of the “Atom” Project Karipbek Kulyukov and public figure Sayasat Nurbek took part in the conference as speakers.

During the discussions, the sides exchanged views on the ongoing stagnation of the process of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, the role of Kazakhstan and Japan in promoting global efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons, as well as the need for greater involvement of civil society in these processes.
