East Kazakhstan is in the list of leaders in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals
Fifty people took part in the East Kazakhstan regional conference, which was devoted to discussing the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals through the lens of gender.
In 2015, Kazakhstan, as a UN member state, assumed obligations to implement the global agenda until 2030 and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It defines 17 goals: the elimination of poverty, hunger, good health, quality education, decent work and economic growth, peace and justice, the fight against climate change, the preservation of ecosystems. An integral part of each of these goals is the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of women.
East Kazakhstan is one of the leaders in the socio-economic development of those positions that today are very important for improving the quality of life. In general, the country adopted a concept of family and gender policy and a number of indicators for which the set objectives are being achieved: indicators in the economy, health care, and education. The deputy akim of the region, Asem Nusupova, emphasized that in the Eastern region, a Comprehensive Plan to improve the efficiency of the health system for 2017-2019 was developed, stroke centers were opened in Ayagoz and Zyryanovsk, and doctors annually undergo training abroad, in the field of education, work is underway to introduce triangulation, IT technology and robotization, a lot of attention is paid to the training of teachers. According to the deputy chairman of the National Commission for Women, Family and Demographic Policy under the President of Kazakhstan, Elena Tarasenko, East Kazakhstan is in 6th position in the country.
– Support and promotion of women’s entrepreneurship and business is needed. According to statistics, 44% of women head medium and small businesses. Reproductive health indicators are also important. It is necessary to reduce child and maternal mortality. We need to pay attention to life expectancy. Unfortunately, the difference between the life expectancy of men and women is large, about 9 years. The goals should be reflected in the regional strategic plans for the economic and social development of the region, says Elena Tarasenko.
In addition, one of the most important positions is the prevention of domestic violence. The law “On the Prevention of Domestic Violence” was adopted in 2009. Today, special crisis centers have been opened to help people in this situation. There they are provided with advisory and methodological assistance, psychological and legal support. There are 28 crisis centers in Kazakhstan. However, in the context of the region only 2 – in Ust-Kamenogorsk and Semey. Of course, this amount is not enough and this is a serious problem. According to the statistics of experts, annually 400 women die from domestic violence in the country. The police of East Kazakhstan notes that every year about 3.5 thousand crimes are committed against women.
– The victims are usually the weak in the family – women, children, the elderly, the disabled. We have a project on the prevention of domestic violence. We provide free legal and psychological counseling. At the moment, we have consulted about 200 residents of the region, ”said Kuat Rakhimberdin, director of PF Kazakhstan International Foundation for Legal Cooperation.
Therefore, the question of opening such centers not only in cities of regional importance, but also in all other cities and regions of the country, where victims of domestic violence can receive psychological assistance, resolve various documentation problems, get a job, remains urgent.
