The “Yellow Cat” film by Adilkhan Yerzhanov was nominated for the Oscar in the “Best Foreign Language Film” category  by the decision of the Oscar Committee of Kazakhstan.This award is presented annually by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and is one of the most prestigious film awards in the world.

The film was shot by ZERDE FILMS (Kazakhstan) with the participation of Short Brothers (Kazakhstan), the Kazakhfilm film studio (Kazakhstan) and Arizona Productions (France). The general producers were Asel Sadvakasova, Kanat Bitemirov and Erbol Toybaev.

“Yellow Cat” is the 9th full-length feature film directed by Yerzhanov. The world premiere of the film took place last year in the “Horizons” competition program at the 77th Venice Film Festival. Later, the film took part in a number of other festivals and won multiple awards, including the Grand Prix for Best Film at festivals in Verona, Italy and Bruges, Belgium, as well as the Best Director prize at the Hope IFF Film Festival in St. .Stockholm, Sweden. Also earlier this year, Yellow Cat was nominated for the Russian Nika Film Awards.

The film tells the story of Kazakhstani “Bonnie and Clyde” – this is the love story of the young man Kermek, who is mired in crime, and the girl Eva, who has gone astray, about the difficulties that have stood in the way of the couple and their opposition to the hostile world. The role of Kermek was played by Russian actor Azamat Nigmanov, whom the viewer knows from the films “The Convoy” by Alexei Mizgirev and “Panfilov’s 28” by Andrei Shaliopa. The role of Eva was played by a young Kazakhstani actress Kamila Nugmanova, who previously starred in the films “Dirt of a Big City” by Nariman Turebayev and “Cloud on the Roof” by Alisher Suleimenov.

Famous Kazakhstani actor Sanzhar Madi starred in the role of crime boss Zhambas. The script was written by Adilkhan Yerzhanov and Inna Smailova. The producers were traditionally the director’s longtime partners – Serik Abishev and Olga Khlashcheva. Their French counterpart Guillaume de Ciel became co-producer. The operator of the film is Erkinbek Ptyraliev. Another longtime associate of the director, Ermek Utegenov, became the production designer. The music for the film was created by composers Alim Zairov and Ivan Sintsov.

The Oscar nominees will be announced on February 8, 2022, and the awards ceremony will be held on March 27, 2022. Kazakhstani viewers can watch the film “Yellow Cat” on the Kinopoisk HD streaming platform.
