SUPPORT FOR DOMESTIC SCIENCE: INCREASING GRANT PROJECTS AND ALLOCATED FUNDS

Today, at a press conference at the Central Communications Service under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Chairman of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan Darkhan Ahmed-Zaki spoke about the support of domestic science, the Press Service of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan reports.

“At present, there are more than 22 thousand scientific personnel in the country. Of these, 36% are young people under the age of 35. There are 1,172 scientists per million people. “As you know, with the support of the Head of State, significant changes have taken place in the field of science in recent years. We have identified the main tasks. This is an increase in the number of scientists, strengthening the scientific ecosystem, increasing the contribution of science to the economy and improving the management of science. First of all, the system of financing science has changed,” said Darkhan Ahmed-Zaki.

The amount of funds to support science in the country and Kazakh scientists next year has been increased. The Ministry has announced three competitions for grant funding for 2023-2025:

for the Zhas Galym project with a budget of 3 billion tenge;

young scientists for scientific and (or) scientific and technical projects for 2023-2025 with a budget of 9 billion tenge;

general competition for 2023-2025 with a budget of 74 billion tenge.

Funding for science has grown by 70% over the past three years. If earlier competitions for grant and targeted funding were announced every three years, now competitions are held annually. In addition, Darkhan Zhumakanovich spoke about the change in the format of the work of the National Scientific Councils. An appeals committee was created. “Currently, one of the main tasks of the ministry is to strengthen the personnel and scientific potential of scientists. The National Project “Technological breakthrough through digitalization, science and innovation” and the Concept for the Development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan set the task of increasing the number of scientists by 1.5 times to 34 thousand people, and increasing the share of young scientists up to 50%,” noted the Chairman of the Committee science. In general, all these measures are aimed at the comprehensive development of Kazakhstani science, increasing its competitiveness and contribution to the sustainable socio-economic progress of the country, and we will continue to strengthen and improve the conditions for our scientists. Thanks to comprehensive support and all the measures taken, it is expected that the share of young scientists by 2025 will reach at least 50%.
