SOTHEBY’S ‘MADE IN BRITAIN’ SALE EXCEEDS HIGH ESTIMATE
Totals £1,962,506
28 September 2016: Sotheby’s Made in Britain sale in London today brought a total of £1,962,506, exceeding the high estimate (£1.2-1.78 million), and with a sell-through rate by lot of 85%.
Robin Cawdron-Stewart, Head of Sale, said: “The passion for uniquely British art remains undimmed among collectors. We saw strong prices across the board for iconic British works – traditional 20th-century pictures, the St. Ives school, studio ceramics – including an early work by Grayson Perry – the School of London group, prints, and paintings by some of Britain’s best loved artists, such as Beryl Cook and Helen Bradley. Though the sale attracted successful bids from across the globe, over three-quarters of the lots sold were acquired by British collectors, who clearly have a special affinity for works produced across a number of different disciplines during the creative surge of the last century.”
