Kazakhstan intends to increase its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations
Kazakhstan intends to increase its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations through joint deployment with India of its contingent in Lebanon and the UN certification of the Kazakhstan training center for peacekeeping training “KAZZENT”. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the United Nations Kairat Umarov at a meeting of the UN Security Council on the reform of UN peacekeeping activities.
During the meeting, the Ambassador of Kazakhstan noted the need for qualitative changes, the application of innovative approaches and new criteria for assessing the UN peacekeeping system. He called strengthening coordination and ensuring the accountability of all UN structures as one of the main conditions for increasing the effectiveness of peacekeeping.
“We are convinced that the active involvement and participation of new countries in the process of UN peacekeeping, including through the joint deployment of contingent, will give new energy and greater effectiveness to UN peacekeeping operations,” K. Umarov said. He added that this process will enhance the credibility and effectiveness of UN missions and will promote cooperation and collective responsibility of countries, regional organizations and the entire world community as a whole.
The head of the Kazakh delegation also stressed the importance of partnership between regional structures in the prevention and resolution of conflicts, and recalled the three-pronged strategy proposed by Kazakhstan for the prevention of conflicts and prevention of their root causes. This strategy is based on strengthening the relationship between security and development in order to increase the effectiveness of the stabilization measures taken by the international community, using a strategic regional approach to address pressing issues, and strengthening the coordination of various UN agencies and agencies to improve the effectiveness of local assistance and transparency .
Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, also addressed the Security Council. He urged countries with advanced military capabilities to send more peacekeepers, equipment and logistics support to UN missions, as well as to strengthen peacekeeping training.
At the end of October this year, Kazakhstan will send a peacekeeping company of 120 servicemen to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon together with Indian peacekeepers.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon was established in March 1978 to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from that country, to assist the government of Lebanon in the restoration of power in the country. Currently, more than 10,000 servicemen from 42 countries are serving in the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon.
