The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly began its work
The 73rd session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York. Secretary General of the World Organization Antonio Guterres recalled the priorities of the UN and called on the world leaders who will arrive in New York next week to show their readiness for cooperation. Concerns of the heads of the UN cause continuing conflicts, political confrontation, deepening humanitarian crisis in some hotbeds of tension.
The theme of the session is “Make the UN closer to the interests of all people: global leadership and shared responsibility in the maintenance of peaceful, just and sustainable societies”.
The main priorities of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly are issues of further reform of the UN, conflict prevention, ensuring human rights, gender equality and overcoming injustice in the world.
The agenda of the session included more than 175 issues in such areas as the maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, humanitarian assistance, disarmament, the promotion of justice and the development of international law.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration of Ecuador, Maria Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, was elected Chairman of the General Assembly at the current session. In the course of her presidency, which will last one year, she intends to give priority to issues of migration, environmental protection, the rights of persons with disabilities, gender equality and the promotion of sustainable development.
An important place in the work of the General Assembly will also be the topic of promoting economic development and the adoption of global agreements on migration and refugees.
In the first days of the new session, substantive issues will be addressed, including those related to the allocation of agenda items to the six main committees of the Assembly. The annual general debate will begin on 25 September and will last until 1 October.
A high-level general debate of the UN General Assembly is being attended by a delegation of the Republic of Kazakhstan headed by Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov. A number of events in the multilateral and bilateral formats are planned for the period from 24 to 29 September. The speech of the Kazakh Foreign Minister is scheduled for September 28.
The central event for Kazakhstan in the fields of the session of the General Assembly will be the presentation of the Code of Conduct “Towards a world free from terrorism”. The document was developed on the initiative of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. The main goal of the Code is the creation of a broad international coalition of partner countries on counter-terrorism and the achievement of a world free of terrorism by the year 2045.
The Kazakh delegation will participate in various meetings in a multilateral format, including the opening of the General Debate of the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly; Informal meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) with the transfer of the chairmanship from the PRC to Tajikistan; a meeting of the Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the member countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO); a high-level meeting devoted to the International Day for the Struggle for the Complete Elimination of Nuclear Weapons; a series of meetings under the aegis of the UN Security Council; Informal meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization; ministerial meeting of the member States of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries; ministerial meeting of the group of friends of the UN Alliance of Civilizations.
Under the chairmanship of the United States, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, a series of open meetings of the UN Security Council will take place, in which Kazakhstan is a non-permanent member in 2017-2018.
Attention is drawn to a number of major events in the area of peacemaking, education, culture, health, in particular, a high-level meeting on the elimination of tuberculosis. The grand opening of the exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Chingiz Aitmatov
K. Abdrakhmanov will hold a number of bilateral meetings with UN officials, foreign ministers and representatives of American and international business.
In general, the session of the UN General Assembly provides an opportunity to promote the implementation of a number of foreign policy initiatives of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev in the spheres of non-proliferation and disarmament, peacekeeping, sustainable social and economic development in the framework of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the UN 2030 Agenda.
