How Kazakhstan’s GDP Energy Intensity Is Reduced

Energy intensity of GDP is an indicator that is used to assess the energy efficiency of national economies.
According to the International Energy Agency, in terms of the energy intensity of GDP, Kazakhstan is ahead of such countries of the Eurasian Economic Union as Belarus, Russia and Kyrgyzstan, while being second only to the indicator of Armenia, the press service of RK MIID reports.

The Kazakh government has set targets for further reductions:
25% by 2020 of 2008,
30% by 2030
50% by 2050.
At the end of 2018, the energy intensity of the country’s GDP was reduced by 33%, which made it possible to achieve the set target indicators ahead of schedule.
The energy intensity of Kazakhstan’s GDP is formed at the expense of a large share of energy-intensive enterprises.
50 large enterprises (24 – energy, 12 – mining and metallurgical complex and 14 – processing industry) account for 62% of the country’s electricity consumption.
Thanks to government measures, all large enterprises have conducted energy audits. And 23 of them – twice.
Based on the results of the energy audit, 42 enterprises have developed plans of measures for energy saving.
Average energy saving potential is 6%.
From 2014 to 2019, large enterprises invested 145 billion tenge in energy efficient measures, the economic effect amounted to 16 billion tenge.
34 enterprises have reduced their specific indicators of energy efficiency for the production of products.
For example, the most significant decrease was shown by Kazzinc with a 13% decrease in specific electricity consumption for the production of refined gold.
